More news on Apple's budget iPhone. And it's good news, too.

While the iPhone 5SE – as the phone previously informally titled the iPhone 6C has now been dubbed – is said to be as small as the iPhone 5S, it could be as powerful as the up-to-the-minute iPhone 6S.

That's according to 9to5Mac. Its sources claim that there are "different prototypes of the device floating around Apple's campus".

Some of the these feature the standard A8 and M8 chips as seen in the iPhone 6, but others use the same A9 and M9 chips as the iPhone 6S. Which would make the iPhone 5SE quite a proposition.

So, is Apple trying out lots of variants before deciding which to plump for? Possibly.

But according to the report, the final version is "more likely to include variants of the A9 and M9 chips instead of the A8 and M8 lines". Which would mean the iPhone 6 has effectively been leapfrogged in the power stakes by its smaller sibling.

This is because when the iPhone 7 launches in September, it will use a new A10 processor, and Apple probably doesn't want the 5SE to be two generations behind just six months after launching.

The M9 would also allow for always-on Siri activation, so you just speak to get its attention.

Come September, the 5SE would probably replace the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in Apple's line-up. The 6 and 6 Plus look almost identical to the 6S and 6S Plus, so it seems pointless to keep around two identikit but less powerful models.
