The much reported iPhone Error 53 glitch, which has rendered thousands of handsets unusable after a software update, is now officially the focus of a class action lawsuit in the US.

Seattle law firm PCVA has followed through on a promise to sue Apple over the error, which affects users who have employed third-party repair store to fix the Touch ID sensor on their phone.

The problem only became apparent, however, after they updated their phones to iOS 9, at which point the handsets were 'bricked'. That is: they were turned into heavy slabs of tech that no longer work.

The class action lawsuit, in which PCVA would represent the interests of thousands of users, could see Apple forced to pay damages to consumers who have lost out as a result of Error 53.

In a statement, PCVA’s Darrell Cochran said: “No materials we've seen from Apple ever show a disclosure that your phone would self-destruct if you download new software onto a phone.

"If Apple wants to kill your phone under any set of circumstances and for any reason, it has to make it crystal clear to its customers before the damage is done."

Apple has faced severe criticism over Error 53. It claims that using a third party to change the Touch ID button, which includes fingerprint scanning technology, puts users’ security at risk.

However, many users have said their devices have failed even when they haven’t had their Touch ID button repaired.

Some claim that Apple is simply using the error as a way of forcing users to have their iPhones fixed at a greater cost in its own high street stores.

It’s long been known that getting an iPhone repaired by a non-Apple technician invalidates your warranty. But now it seems there’s another price to pay for leaving the company’s hermetic hug.

According to what reports suggest are 'thousands' of user testimonies, the latest iOS 9 version of Apple’s operating system is capable of determining if a third-party shop has carried out repairs to an iPhone in the past.

If it has, the software renders the phone useless. Or ‘bricks it’, to use the parlance of tech fans.

Worse still, images, videos, contacts and music stored on the phone are erased too, without hope of retrieval unless you backed up the data or use Apple's iCloud cloud storage service.

The problem, which has been dubbed Error 53, appears to be restricted to iPhones equipped with TouchID fingerprint recognition technology in the home button.

But it’s seemingly only come to light once users have updated their phones to the latest iOS 9 version of Apple’s iPhone operating system.

As is the way of such things, some have speculated that Apple has installed the ‘bricking’ mechanism in iOS 9 as a cash cow, effectively forcing customers into an official Apple Store. Where, of course, repairs are usually much more costly than at your friendly, neighbourhood phone repair shop.

We  know the iPhone 6S will get three levels of Force Touch, which is one more than the Apple Watch and MacBook. But that's not all that's changing. It now seems the screen could be in for a bump in resolution too.

According to a leak from Weibo user @KJuma, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6S will have a resolution of 1,125x2,000 pixels, giving it a pixel per inch count of 488ppi. Which would be quite a step up from the iPhone 6's resolution of 750x1,134, and 326ppi.

The iPhone 6S Plus is also said to be in line for a significant jump in resolution, from 1,080x1,920 pixels (401ppi) to 1,242x2,208 (466ppi).

Both screens are rumoured to stay the same size. Indeed, both phones are expected to look almost identical to their predecessors, though they might be slightly fatter to prevent another bendgate.

The Chinese site also claims to have the iPhone 6S's specs via a benchmark from Geekbench. It claims the handset will have a 1.8GHz A9 SoC chipset with 2GB of RAM.

Of course these are unsubstantiated, so take it all with a pinch of salt. But there's not long until the rumours are dispelled and we know for sure.

Google has not just one, but two new Nexus smartphones waiting in the wings. It'll be the first time it's launched two smartphones at once, and like the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, they'll be different sizes.

But unlike other firms' flagships, they'll both be made by different companies: rumours say the 5.2-inch one will be made by LG, while the 5.7-incher will be made by Huawei.

So what else is there to know? Read on, and we'll give you the skinny on what could be the iPhone's fiercest rivals.

According to sources speaking to CNET, both phones will launch on September 29th – that's three weeks today.

The sources say the event will be held in San Francisco, meaning it'll likely be in the evening UK time.

This would be a little earlier than Google's previous Nexus launches. It unveiled the Nexus 6 on October 15th last year, and the Nexus 5 on October 31st 2013.

An earlier launch is likely because Google wants to stop Apple hogging all the headlines.

That's according to TalkAndroid's sources.

October 13th would be two weeks after launch, which would make sense. The delay would also allow Google to snag headlines for weeks, rather than making the phones available the day they're announced.

There's no word yet on availability, but it's safe to assume they'll start shipping around the start of November. That would be a full month after the new iPhones have gone on sale.
