The much reported iPhone Error 53 glitch, which has rendered thousands of handsets unusable after a software update, is now officially the focus of a class action lawsuit in the US.

Seattle law firm PCVA has followed through on a promise to sue Apple over the error, which affects users who have employed third-party repair store to fix the Touch ID sensor on their phone.

The problem only became apparent, however, after they updated their phones to iOS 9, at which point the handsets were 'bricked'. That is: they were turned into heavy slabs of tech that no longer work.

The class action lawsuit, in which PCVA would represent the interests of thousands of users, could see Apple forced to pay damages to consumers who have lost out as a result of Error 53.

In a statement, PCVA’s Darrell Cochran said: “No materials we've seen from Apple ever show a disclosure that your phone would self-destruct if you download new software onto a phone.

"If Apple wants to kill your phone under any set of circumstances and for any reason, it has to make it crystal clear to its customers before the damage is done."

Apple has faced severe criticism over Error 53. It claims that using a third party to change the Touch ID button, which includes fingerprint scanning technology, puts users’ security at risk.

However, many users have said their devices have failed even when they haven’t had their Touch ID button repaired.

Some claim that Apple is simply using the error as a way of forcing users to have their iPhones fixed at a greater cost in its own high street stores.

Periscope, Twitter’s live streaming service, is set to be among the first apps to make the jump from iPhone and iPad to the new Apple TV.

Apple is believed to be readying a revamped version of its set top box, which will offer third-party apps for the first time. According to sources speaking with TechCrunch, Periscope will be one of these at launch.

The exact details of how Periscope will work on the big screen are not yet clear. But it doesn’t take a tech genius to work out that streaming live clips from an iPhone to an Apple TV will be relatively straightforward and hugely appealing to existing users.

Twitter, Facebook and other social apps are likely to make the move from the App Store on your phone to the one on your telly.

Likewise, games are set to be a big deal, with the new box’s remote control offering motion sensitivity and the potential to act as a gaming controller.

Apple will also reveal its new iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus and updated iPad range alongside the Apple TV at a special event in San Francisco this evening.

Three’s free roaming Feel at Home scheme delivers savings of £330 year to each customer, the carrier claims, as it touts its value-adding sweetener during peak holiday season.

Feel at Home enables Three customers to use their phones and tablets abroad for no extra charge. It works by effectively extending the reach of their UK allowance of minutes, texts and data to 18 overseas locations, which now include Britons' favourite holiday hotspots Spain and France.

According to Three, since the introduction of the scheme in 2013 subscribers have saved a total of £1.3 billion, with 538,000 people benefiting from Feel at Home during August and September alone.

Interestingly, Three claims that the average customer gets through 500MB of data per trip overseas. That’s a not inconsiderable amount, given that the average UK contract features a monthly download limit of around 2GB.

ianne Norry, director of brand & comms at Three, said: “Three was the first UK network to allow customers to use their phones abroad at no extra cost, to banish bill-shock and improve peoples’ holiday experiences. We continue to lead the way in making roaming charges fairer.

"The fact that we’ve saved our customers a whopping £1.3 billion proves the true extent of the great roaming rip-off, people are being treated unfairly by other networks, so we will continue to make it right for them with Feel at Home.”
