LG has released a series of teasers for the handset via social media, as well as launching the hashtag #LGG5 on Twitter.

The phone will be shown off at a special event in Barcelona, aimed to coincide with the annual Mobile World Congress expo being held in the city that week.

While specs have not been revealed, leakers are already having a field day telling everyone what to expect. Evan Blass, of @evleaks fame, says that the LG G5 will come with a secondary screen, fingerprint scanner and dual lens camera.

The screen will come at 5.5–inches while it will also feature a new Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. However, the most exciting rumour focuses on a so–called ‘Magic Slot’ which allow users to add modules.

Although exact details of this function are unclear, it could mean adding various camera lens and VR tools to improve the phone’s performance.

It’s long been known that getting an iPhone repaired by a non-Apple technician invalidates your warranty. But now it seems there’s another price to pay for leaving the company’s hermetic hug.

According to what reports suggest are 'thousands' of user testimonies, the latest iOS 9 version of Apple’s operating system is capable of determining if a third-party shop has carried out repairs to an iPhone in the past.

If it has, the software renders the phone useless. Or ‘bricks it’, to use the parlance of tech fans.

Worse still, images, videos, contacts and music stored on the phone are erased too, without hope of retrieval unless you backed up the data or use Apple's iCloud cloud storage service.

The problem, which has been dubbed Error 53, appears to be restricted to iPhones equipped with TouchID fingerprint recognition technology in the home button.

But it’s seemingly only come to light once users have updated their phones to the latest iOS 9 version of Apple’s iPhone operating system.

As is the way of such things, some have speculated that Apple has installed the ‘bricking’ mechanism in iOS 9 as a cash cow, effectively forcing customers into an official Apple Store. Where, of course, repairs are usually much more costly than at your friendly, neighbourhood phone repair shop.

Facebook has confirmed it's working on its own virtual assistant service, aimed at taking on the likes of Apple’s Siri and Google Now.

The tool, which is purportedly simply called 'M', forms part of the social network’s Messenger app. Unlike Siri, Microsoft Cortana or Google Now, it doesn’t take voice commands, but answers queries via text.

Facebook says it uses artificial intelligence that’s supervised by humans, with text input meaning it should be more accurate than its rivals.

What makes Facebook's assistant service particularly interesting is the fact that it can carry out tasks for users as well as answering queries.

According to Facebook’s David Marcus, who revealed the news, 'M' can "purchase items, get gifts delivered to your loved ones, book restaurants, [make] travel arrangements, appointments and way more".

For those with privacy concerns, 'M' will only use data from the Messenger app, not from your regular page.

At the moment, the service is only being trialled by select users in the San Francisco Bay Area. But expect that to change if Facebook sees an opportunity to roll it out and take a slice out of the competition.

Microsoft has a new Lumia-branded phone up its sleeve. But it could be the last-ever.

The Lumia 650 is set to debut on February 1st, but Microsoft won't launching it with a publicity blitz.

Instead of holding a launch party, it will merely announce the handset on its blog. That's according to Windows Central, which has spoken to sources familiar with the matter.

As you might guess, the Lumia 650 will be a low-end affair. Rumoured specs include a 5-inch 720p screen, 1GB of RAM, and an 8-megapixel rear camera. All of which are unlikely to set the world alight.

The Lumia 750 and 850 were reportedly intended to arrive later, but have now been cancelled.

That means the Lumia 650 will likely be the last Lumia phone we see this year, possibly ever. Sad times.

However, Microsoft isn't bowing out of mobile market entirely. Instead, it will focus its energies on its flagship Panos phone, which will most probably come bearing Surface branding.

Microsoft has had some success with the well reviewed Surface range of tablet/laptop hybrids, so let's hope its phone lives up to its name.

The first Windows 10 Lumia left a lot to be desired.

Microsoft bought the Lumia brand when it completed the acquisition of Nokia's mobile division back in 2014.
